LEAF SUGAR COOKIES

Ingredients

  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 c butter
  • 1 egg
  • 3 c flour
  • 1 t baking soda
  • 1/4 t nutmeg

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425º
  2. Cream butter and sugar.
  3. Beat in egg.
  4. Sift flour, soda and nutmeg. Add to butter and mix well.
  5. Turn to floured board and roll out to 1/8” thickness.
  6. Cut out cookies, re-rolling as needed.
  7. Bake 6 to 7 minutes.
  8. Sprinkle sugar on cookies before baking, or frost when cool.

Be careful when re-rolling, too much flour causes cookies to crumble. I once asked Mama how to keep the sugar from falling off the cookies. She said that if you over sugar the cookie, lightly press sugar into cookie. The extra sugar will fall off.
